Artist Santa Barraza conducts guided tour

Santa Barraza, one of the featured artists in the Arte y Tradicion de La Frontera exhibition, gave a lecture, gallery walk and book signing at the Educational & Cultural Arts Center on Sunday, April 12. In her presentation, "Las Mujeres Nobles de la Frontera (Noble Women of the Borderlands): A Visual Interpretation," she discussed her interest and artwork that features the women of the borderlands.

Barraza currently teaches at Texas A&M University-Kingsville in the art department, specializing in drawing, painting and studio art. She has lectured at universities internationally and is featured in nearly 20 permanent and private art collections. In the past ten years, her work has been shown in over 50 exhibitions around the world.

Fiesta: San Antonio Style in Austin

Texas A&M-San Antonio brought a taste of Fiesta San Antonio to Austin this week with a themed party at the Legislative Conference Center in the Texas State Capitol Building. A&M-SA was excited to welcome representatives from around the state, including Senators Carlos Uresti, John Whitmire, Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa and Jose Menendez, and Representatives Joe Farias, Rick Galindo, Lyle Larson and Justin Rodriguez.

They were joined by members of the A&M family, including Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp and Texas A&M San Antonio Foundation Board members Arline Patterson, Dr. Frank Madla, III, Derek Naiser, and Evangelina "Vangie" Flores. A&M-SA Jaguar Ambassadors and Student Government Association members greeted guests and handed out the 2015 A&M-SA Fiesta medal, on sale beginning Friday, April 17.

Borderlands Symposium engages with environmental issuesBorderlands Symposium engages with environmental issues

The third session of the running U.S-Mexico Borderlands Symposium, hosted at the Educational & Cultural Arts Center on Saturday, April 11, was focused on "Air, Land and Water: Critical Environmental Issues of the U.S-Mexico Border." Panelists included Steve Niemeyer, Border Affairs liaison, Juan Antonio Flores, director of Public Affairs at the North American Development Bank, Dr. Rodolfo Valdez Barillas, A&M-SA assistant professor of biology, and Oscar J. Munoz, director of the Texas A&M Colonias Project at Texas A&M University-College Station.


Education professor published in book on play

Dr. Edith Esparza-Young, assistant professor of bilingual education and ESL, was recently published in Children's Play: Research, Reflections & Possibilities. Her chapter, entitled "Playing at Home Redefined: Supporting Biliteracy at Home through Organic Play," features her research into bilingual families and how play can support children's literacy in multiple languages. As part of her research agenda, which includes preserving native languages, Dr. Esparza-Young collaborated with teachers in rural villages of Alaska, including Toksook, Eek, and others. All book proceeds go to the International Play Association for the American Association of Children's Right to Play.

U.S. Congressman Will Hurd and Dr. Matson photoCongressman Hurd opens new office at Patriots' Casa

Last week, U.S. Congressman Will Hurd opened his new Southside district office at A&M-SA's Patriots' Casa, following a VA panel with Dr. Charles Rodriguez, chief of staff and vice president of Strategic Initiatives and Military Community Development, Richard Delgado, director of Military Community Relations, and Van Mitchell from the American G.I. Forum. At the panel, Hurd took questions from the audience regarding veterans' issues and discussed his vision for helping veterans and increasing national and cyber security.

"There's great alignment between his interests as a veteran and being here in Patriots' Casa, and his work on various committees including those having to do with security," said Dr. Cynthia Teniente-Matson, president of A&M-SA, about Hurd's new office location.

The A&M-SA Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) won the Office of Student Activities' "Like, Share & Win" contest this month, beating out other student organizations by having the most likes and shares on Facebook. The contest ran from March 16-27 and awarded a $200 prize to the winning organization. Congratulations SHRM for utilizing social media to spread the word!

Arte y Tradicion de La Frontera: The U.S.-Mexico Borderlands in the Works of Santa Barraza and Carmen Lomas Garza is running from January 30 through May 24.
